7 days ago, I got a heart-warming email from our toolkit member Catherine. It brought tears to my eyes. Why?
Because I’m mostly sitting behind my laptop (and so is Hugo, the main developer of the toolkit), having no idea what kind of impact we’re making in the real world with all of the positive psychology resources we’re putting out there.
It’s emails like Catherine’s that remind us of why we do what we do. I wanted to share this with you to give you a sense of how other practitioners are using the toolkit but also to tell you that you can make a huge impact by simply showing your heartfelt appreciation to someone, today. It’s so powerful.
Here’s a very short interview with Catherine about how she uses the toolkit:
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Catherine Bell, I’m a practitioner of Applied Positive Psychology. I run a consulting business in Organisational Development and Leadership in Melbourne, Australia.
What are you using the toolkit for?
I use the toolkit for activity ideas when working with 1:1 Coaching Clients, as well as groups – and it’s also a great source of inspiration to spark new ideas for myself and my own happiness!
Can you share an example with us of how you put these PP tools into practice?
Last year I created a custom video series for a group of about 50 people whose manufacturing plant is shutting down. They were in a very negative state, unable to concentrate at work in their remaining months and starting to feel the ill-effects of the stress and uncertainty in their home relationships.
They had already received enormous support from the company with career guidance, re-training and help in interview techniques and resume writing – but they were still (understandably) not in a positive emotional state.
The wonderful HR Manager contacted me for help as she wanted to do everything possible to support her workforce through their transition.
I produced a 12-part Resilience series for them with short videos and worksheets, including some exercises adapted from the toolkit, and the results have been wonderful.
The HR Manager tells me that for the first time in 6 months people are starting to smile again at work, great teamwork is returning and the culture has shifted back to being more productive and positive. Importantly, the staff are also now feeling more optimistic about their prospects in new roles, which is helping them have better outcomes in their job search, and in their home lives too. This work makes my heart SING! Thank you for a great toolkit that helped me make this happen for these beautiful people.
Would you recommend the positive psychology toolkit to other practitioners?
Absolutely! I have been a subscriber from the early days and the 2.0 update has taken the toolkit to a whole new level! As well as being a reliable source for great ideas and practical activities, the new tools that you keep adding, keep me coming back for more! I plan to keep up my subscription indefinitely.
