What would your life look like if you were to fully and completely accept and value yourself with all your perceived weaknesses and shortcomings? As a coach or mentor, which tools do you use to support your clients on their path to Self-Acceptance?
I believe most of us have the potential to go one step further in becoming our own best friend. So I have evaluated the brand-new Self-Acceptance Masterclass the Positive Psychology Program Team has developed.
In this straightforward review I will tell you The Good, The Bad and The Ugly about this Masterclass, so you can gauge whether it is for you – or not.
Just another Online Course?
The internet is full of (free and paid) webinars, classes and self-help seminars. So, whether you are working as Life Coach or you are interested in personal growth for yourself (or both), there is a great number of offers to choose from.
Hence, when I was asked whether I would be interested to write a review about the new the Self-Acceptance Masterclass offered by the Positive Psychology Program, I wasn’t exactly giddy with excitement.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the PPP toolkit and often use it in coachings with my clients. But I have seen one too many (mediocre) webinars to get excited about a masterclass.
So I checked out the Self-Acceptance Masterclass. And I was deeply touched by what I found!
Trust me on this one: this Masterclass is made to change lives rather than just to make money (like some of them are). First of all, the content is top notch! And it reminded me why I love working with these guys, Hugo and Seph.
There are three parts to this Masterclass. The first one is the introduction of Hugo (the teacher) and the members of the class. Having a real classroom situation is one of the many reasons this course stands out from other online classes. The interaction with his audience is key for Hugo, who explains:
“The way I see it is that we are all teachers, so let us share our experiences and learn from each other.”
Online participants love this setting, here are some of the comments:
“What a wonderful, dynamic group! I am looking forward to learning from everyone.” — Donna
“Not only am I excited about the curriculum… but I also found each participant quite inspiring.” — Julie
The first part further covers an introduction to Positive Psychology but Hugo also explains how in the past PP has focused too much on positive aspects of human functioning and has failed to acknowledge that well-being can also emerge from dealing with negative events.
This is crucial because of the actual lectures on Self-Acceptance cover weaknesses and what to gain from them in great detail.
Hugo does not just warm up old facts, he critically evaluates where PP is going, points out new directions and combines them with his own knowledge and experience. This is very authentic, as Hugo shares his own story with the participants.
The second part is an outline of the Sailboat metaphor which the entire Masterclass is based on. This is explained in detail and provides a fantastic basis. Every lecture on Self-Acceptance (which is part three of the Masterclass) is aligned with this metaphor. Having this kind of framework is brilliant, not only for a recurrent theme for the Masterclass. But also to provide different ways to address the topic with clients, by helping them to locate what is going on in their lives and visually anchor new behaviors.
I like how this metaphor takes any coaching session to a new level.
I wholeheartedly agree with these comments from participants:
“This is a really powerful metaphor for me and those that I coach!” — Shar
“So powerful for us as coaches, and also as ‘not-yet-perfect’ people.” — Yvonne
As mentioned earlier, part three covers the theory of Self-Acceptance in great depth. And I can assure even the most knowledgeable readers: you are bound to learn something new! The lectures cover many different aspects of the topic and two whole lecture are dedicated to dealing with and gaining from weaknesses. And last but not least: this content is great motivation if you have not been to any courses or classes lately and would like an extra boost of inspiration.
But not only the content is convincing, I was very happy with the technical side. This masterclass is really made with the user in mind! You can download (and use) all PowerPoint slides, all classes are available as audio files (so you can listen to when you’re on the go) and the best is: there is not only a handbook but also a workbook to use with your clients!
Like the PPP toolbox, the Masterclass is very intuitive and easy to navigate, so you won’t lose time trying to find your way around (which can be annoying for user experience).
What I also really liked about this Masterclass is that, as an online participant, you are in touch with others through the comments section which is very popular. An online course doesn’t get more authentic! Being a tool for professionals, the exchange is very valuable. And there is also a large FAQ as well as the opportunity to contact the producer. Yep, you are in good hands!
Now for all you coaches out there, if you are looking to come up with your own coaching product, this is brilliant! Unlike other classes and webinars, you get to use the complete content including the illustrations for your own purpose! This includes the sailboat metaphor which is an underlying framework to base your product on. You can use the images, the content, anything you wish! It does not get any better! Or does it?
All right, so is it all just perfect? Nope, absolutely not. There are a few things I thought could be improved. First of all, unlike the fantastic blog posts, there is no such thing as a summary of the lectures. And like I said, there is a lot of content! If you are keen on watching all the lectures and reading through the book, you won’t find this too irritating. But if you’re one of those shortcut lovers (like me), you will be missing that sexy summary.
However, here is my tip: if you are pressed for time, instead of watching the lectures, simply download the audio sequences which are much shorter and to the point.
Secondly, let’s talk about the fun factor, an important aspect in well-being. While there are illustrations to accompany the sailboat metaphor, I find them rather technical and not very emotional. The same goes for the PowerPoint slides; they are very professional yet they lack the fun factor. You won’t find too many witty images to liven up the topic. So if you’re looking for a fun night in, this Masterclass may not be your first choice.
So that’s what you’ll have to deal with.
I really wanted to use the three headings, so here is the third. But frankly, the Masterclass is of such a high quality, I simply could not find anything completely off. Nope, not even the price. You get so much content to use for yourself and your clients, it is, in fact, fantastic value!
A Take Home Message
In summary, I’m very impressed with what this masterclass offers and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about Self-Acceptance and update on the latest findings. However, if you prefer a humorous learning environment this Masterclass may not be for you.
As there is a lot of content, you can save time by listening to the audio files rather than watching the lectures. And if you are a life coach and would like to come up with your own product, this is simply brilliant and you are going to love it!
If you choose to complete one training every year, make the Self-Acceptance Masterclass your goal for 2019!
